MEDASSET conducted the first survey to identify and record sea turtle nesting activity on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, in 1993. Research focused on the coast between El Sallum and Alexandria, providing new information on nesting levels, threats, and useful recommendations to protect these coasts.
The project led to the inclusion of sea turtle protection in the national Law 4/1994 for Protection of the Environment. The project also provided information on the illegal trade of marine turtles, particularly in Alexandria.
