The second workshop Caretta²Zakynthos: Actions to Reduce the Impacts of Bycatch and Marine Pollution on Caretta Turtles on the Island of Zakynthos was successfully held on November 27 at the Amphitheater of the Ionian University in Zakynthos, drawing strong participation and meaningful dialogue.
Building on the momentum of the first workshop, this event reaffirmed the project’s commitment to informing and engaging the local community on issues critical to the protection of the marine environment. The amphitheater was filled with students from the Department of Environment, university staff, and local residents, all eager to contribute to discussions on the challenges facing marine turtles and the island’s wider marine ecosystems. The conversation that followed the presentations was dynamic, highlighting shared concerns and fostering collaborative thinking.
During the workshop, were presented the latest results of the Caretta²Zakynthos project. The project is part of the Greece Wildlife Alliance initiative, implemented by MEDASSET and funded by WWF Greece.
Speakers addressed key threats such as bycatch, shared insights from port and seabed cleanup activities in Zakynthos, and discussed targeted measures that can significantly strengthen wildlife protection efforts.
Speakers included:
- Nikos Simantiris (MEDASSET – Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles)
- Nikos Karatzas (AquaTec Diver Training)
- Vasilis Gerovasileiou (Department of Environment, Ionian University)
The open discussion that followed gave students and participants a valuable platform to exchange ideas, share experiences, and propose solutions—further enriching the collective effort to protect Zakynthos’ marine environment and its iconic sea turtle populations.
