The SEAniors On The Move project, held under the IKY Erasmus+ initiative, concluded successfully, offering a unique learning and cultural exchange experience for senior citizens. Our journey began in Greece, traveling by bus and ferry to Italy—putting into practice the idea of eco-friendly mobility. This conscious choice, combined with walking for all nearby visits, aimed to raise awareness about environmental protection.
The first days of the program in Lecce included a series of educational workshops, cultural activities, and hands-on experiences that allowed participants to deeply connect with the environment and with one another. A standout activity was the art therapy workshop, where participants expressed thoughts on sustainability, emotions, and creativity through art.
In collaboration with the Italian organization EduVita, the Greek participants had the opportunity to meet their Italian counterparts, exchange experiences, and present their cities and cultural identities. Knowledge sharing on environmental education, discussions on local initiatives, and of course, the delightful taste of traditional handmade sweets created a warm and welcoming atmosphere of intercultural exchange.
As part of our eco-conscious exploration, we visited WWF Oasi Le Cesine, one of the region’s most important nature reserves. Being immersed in this unique landscape, with its wetland ecosystems and guided tours by the center’s experts, helped participants understand the importance of biodiversity conservation and the ongoing efforts to protect the environment.
The group also visited Greek-speaking villages and met with the Mayor of Castrignano de’ Greci. Discussions focused on the municipality’s sustainability initiatives, the value of environmental education, and the link between cultural heritage and modern society.
SEAniors On The Move was more than just an educational program—it was a profound life experience that highlighted the importance of lifelong learning, intergenerational connection, and active social participation at any age. The program’s success proves that when education, culture, and sustainability come together, they can create a meaningful experience that leaves a lasting impact—on both the participants and the communities that welcome them.
