SEAniors’ Alliance is an Erasmus+ project uniting organizations from Greece, Italy, and Portugal to empower older adults through environmental education, digital skills, and intergenerational collaboration. The initiative brings together international partners: in Greece, MEDASSET – Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles and Startagers Social Cooperative Enterprise; in Italy, EduVita; and in Portugal, Future Balloons. Together, we create opportunities for older adults to engage in lifelong learning and meaningful community participation.
Through hands-on workshops, interactive educational games, and local initiatives, participants become SEAnior Ambassadors, leading environmental projects, challenging age-related stereotypes, and demonstrating that learning has no age limit.
From 15 to 17 October 2025, SEAniors’ participants took part in an international environmental field study in Kyparissia and the wider Western Peloponnese. The program combined field-based learning with dialogues and meetings with local farmers, conservationists, and guides, offering a comprehensive view of the region’s environmental challenges.
Participants explored the Kyparissia coastline and key sea turtle nesting areas, discussing threats to marine biodiversity such as rising temperatures, coastal erosion, and human activity. They continued to Gialova Lagoon and Voidokilia Beach, one of the region’s most important wetland ecosystems, highlighting the vulnerability of coastal and wetland habitats to climate change.
Visits to local olive farms and mills illustrated the impacts of prolonged droughts, irregular rainfall, higher temperatures, and emerging pests on traditional agriculture. The field study also connected environmental change to cultural heritage, with excursions to the Archaeological Site of Olympia, the Foloi Oak Forest, and Kyparissia Castle, demonstrating the intertwined risks to natural and historical landscapes, including biodiversity loss and increasing wildfire frequency.
Through collaboration and shared experiences, the SEAniors’ Alliance highlights that addressing climate change requires holistic, community-driven solutions that integrate science, culture, and local knowledge.
