Your Plastic Sea

An installation was designed for MEDASSET by international artists Michela Pelusio and Rose Mari Torpo as part of our “Join in and Clean Up” campaign. The artwork consists of a large, suspended fishing net containing hundreds of small plastic debris, collected during a beach clean-up activity in Heraklion, Crete, in June 2012. The installation was set-up by 350 pupils, teachers, members of local NGOs, voluntary groups, and employees from the local factory of the Coca-Cola HBC.

Pieces of debris were tied to the net in a way that allowed free movement in the wind, creating reflection and sound, communicating a multi-dimensional message that stresses the need to protect our seas. A workshop followed, led and supervised by both the creative artists and co-organised by MEDASSET and the Primary Education Office of Heraklion.

During the summer of 2012, the installation was displayed at the patio of the Venetian Loggia, in Heraklion, Crete island and was one of the selected artworks to be exhibited at the Renaissance Festival in Rethimnon, Crete island later that summer. Since then it has been displayed in educational workshops, events and exhibitions to educate people about marine litter and has inspired many educators to implement similar projects with their classrooms. In 2014, 9 elegant photos which help tell the story of its creation were added to the installation, transforming it to a complete, travelling exhibition which proved to be a powerful tool to raise public awareness on the reform of the EU’s Fisheries Policy.
