Athina I. Martinou Foundation Project
Protecting the marine environment is more urgent than ever, and ghost nets are among the most insidious threats to ocean life. In response, we launched an organized program of underwater cleanups in the Sounio area, aiming to locate and remove abandoned fishing nets from the seabed.
The program is funded by a grant from the Athina I. Martinou Foundation and implemented in collaboration with the expert team of professional divers at AquaTec, making a meaningful contribution to the restoration of local marine ecosystems.
Why it matters:
Ghost nets are not just marine litter — they are active traps that continue to kill sea creatures such as turtles, dolphins, sharks, and fish. They also cause long-term damage to the seabed, affecting local ecosystems and fisheries.
With every cleanup action:
-
We protect marine life
-
We relieve pressure on the ecosystem
-
We give abandoned nets a second life through recycling
