The Medbycatch project, taking place in the Mediterranean waters of Tunisia, Morocco, Turkey, Italy and Croatia, has as a main object to amplify knowledge on the vulnerable species incidentally caught during fishing operations. To gather robust data, we conduct observation programs in the marine areas of interest. Observation programs comprise of on-board observation, port questionnaires and self-sampling methods. To assist the observers and the fishing community in identifying vulnerable marine species accurately, we have developed the “Pocket Identification Guides of Main Vulnerable Species” incidentally caught in fishing gear.
The pocket guides are a practical and easy to use tool for the identification of bycaught marine species with just a glance. Targeted to 3 geographic areas: the Levantine Sea (Turkey), Sicily Strait- Tunisia Plateau (Tunisia) and the Alboran Sea (Morocco), they are a valuable tool for accurate bycatch information.
