MEDASSET was honoured to collaborate with the Turtle-In Academy, a field-training program dedicated to strengthening knowledge, skills and community engagement for sea turtle conservation, health and welfare.
Organised by AKDDCL (Association Kraten du Développement Durable, de la Culture et des Loisirs), the program took place from 7–11 July 2026 on the Kerkennah Islands, Tunisia, bringing together conservation practitioners, experts, local communities and participants for an intensive learning experience focused on protecting Mediterranean sea turtles.
Representing MEDASSET, Scientific Officer Alexandra Panagiotou contributed her expertise to the program by delivering an interactive session on sea turtle behavior, welfare and enrichment, sharing knowledge and practical approaches that support improved care and conservation outcomes for these vulnerable marine species.
Combining science, training and community action
The Turtle-In Academy combined classroom learning, hands-on field experience and community engagement to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of sea turtle conservation.
During the educational sessions, participants explored key topics including:
- Sea turtle biology, life cycles and ecological importance
- Conservation technologies, including tagging and video monitoring methods
- Sea turtle medicine and health assessment
- Behavior, welfare and enrichment approaches
The program then moved from theory into practice, with participants applying their knowledge at the sea turtle rescue station. Under expert guidance, they were able to:
- Observe sea turtles in the marine environment and assess their behavior
- Participate in health assessments and learn about rehabilitation approaches
- Support discussions on treatment and recovery plans alongside veterinary experts
- Take part in a sea turtle necropsy to better understand anatomy and veterinary procedures
- Assist with transmitter tagging and the release of rehabilitated turtles back into the wild
Building bridges between conservation and communities
From 11–13 July, invited experts continued their engagement with the AKDDCL team and the local fishing community, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, cultural sharing and stronger relationships between conservation stakeholders.
The final component of the program focused on transforming scientific knowledge into meaningful action. Through group discussions and presentations, participants explored how conservation data can be communicated effectively, inspire local involvement and support community-led marine conservation initiatives.
MEDASSET is proud to contribute to initiatives that bring together science, education and community participation to protect Mediterranean marine biodiversity. Collaboration and knowledge exchange remain essential tools in ensuring a future where sea turtles and coastal communities can thrive together.
