Continuing the journey of the LIFE MareNatura documentary, the production team traveled to the Gulf of Mesara in Crete to document the important conservation efforts led by ARCHELON – Τhe Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece.
At dawn on Matala beach, MEDASSET and the director accompanied ARCHELON’s research coordinator, Aliki Panagopoulou, as she and her team conducted GPS tagging of nesting sea turtles. This fieldwork is essential for monitoring the movements and migration patterns of these marine reptiles. The tracking data collected informs scientists about critical habitats and migration corridors, guiding future protection measures.
Throughout the visit, the documentary team filmed both the natural beauty of the nesting process and the meticulous scientific procedures involved. The footage highlights the integration of hands-on fieldwork with advanced technology in marine conservation.
By showcasing this vital part of the sea turtles’ life cycle, the documentary reinforces the connection between scientific research, species protection, and habitat preservation — key themes of the LIFE MareNatura project.
