Two seabed clean ups were coordinated by the Management Unit of Parnitha, Schinias and Saronic Gulf Protected Areas National Parks of NECCA , near the islet of Patroklos, in the marine protected area of Attica, in an effort to address the problem of marine pollution and especially of abandoned or lost nets in the sea, also called “ghostnets“.
The seabed clean ups were carried out by MEDASSET on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th of April, within the framework of the project “Eco-Management, Restoration and Targeted Information/Awareness Raising Activities for the Coastal and Marine Ecosystems of the National Parks of Parnitha, Schinias and the Saronic Gulf Protected Areas of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (N.E.C.C.A.)”, funded by the “Attica 2014-2020” Regional Operational Program.
During the cleanups, technical divers managed to recover almost 1 ton of abandoned nets. The nets were then transferred to a dedicated collection point for nets and marine plastic waste in the fishing port of Lavrio, in order to enter the circular economy. In this way, the nets that were polluting the marine area and capturing vulnerable marine species will be transformed into new products, realising the circular economy principles.
