The 2nd Annual Coordination Meeting of the LIFE MareNatura Program was successfully held, bringing together partners from Greece and abroad. LIFE MareNatura is being implemented by twelve direct partners under the coordination of HCMR, namely: ARCHELON, ISPRA, NECCA, UAegean, UoC, NOA, HOS, MOm, MEDASSET, NCC and Waterproof Marine Consultancy & Services. They will join their forces to implement targeted conservation, policy and advocacy, and awareness raising activities. Also, the project’s special policy partner is The Green Tank.
The meeting highlighted the latest developments and achievements in scientific research, policy implementation, and communication efforts. It also served as a valuable platform for exchanging ideas and proposals, further strengthening collaboration among partners.
LIFE MareNatura is now closer to achieving its primary goal: the protection of marine habitats that support important and vulnerable species of Greek marine fauna. This is being pursued through the promotion of new marine protected areas, expanding the Natura 2000 network in Greece.
This effort aligns with the European Union’s new biodiversity strategy, which aims to protect at least 30% of Europe’s land and sea by 2030, contributing significantly to global biodiversity goals.
LIFE MareNatura is advancing steadily, demonstrating the power of collective effort and collaboration for the mitigation of the threats that affect nine vulnerable marine species (the Mediterranean Monk Seal, the Loggerhead Turtle, the Green Turtle, the Sperm Whale, the Harbour Porpoise, the Cuvier’s Beaked Whale, the Common Dolphin, the Yelkouan Shearwater and the Audouin’s Gull) and significantly contribute to the conservation of marine biodiversity in Greek waters.
